The best time for carpet cleaning before the holidays is after the house is cleared out and before the tree, boxes, and guests arrive. That window is shorter than it looks. Once decorations go up and the calendar fills with parties, there's nowhere to move the furniture and no quiet day for the carpet to dry.
This isn't a booking rule, just how we'd plan it if it were our own house. Work backward from your first big guest date, leave a buffer, and decide what else needs cleaning on the same visit.
Start With Your First Guest Date
Pick the first day that really matters. For some people it's Thanksgiving dinner. For others it's a December party, a visiting relative, or a family photo in front of the tree. Write that date down, then count backward.
You need room for three things between the cleaning and the guests: the carpet drying, putting furniture back, and a spare day in case something runs late or the weather changes. Our planning range for drying is 8 to 24 hours, and our guide to how long carpet takes to dry after cleaning explains what changes it.
When to Book Carpet Cleaning Before the Holidays
We can't give you a magic number of weeks, because it depends on the calendar that week. What we can say is that holiday weeks are busy for almost everyone, and the earlier you ask, the more choice you have for the day and time.
So a good rule is to call before you've decorated, not after. Tell us your guest date and ask what the open days look like. If your first choice is full, you'll still have time to pick another.
If you're booking close to a deadline, say so up front. That helps us tell you honestly what's possible, instead of finding out on the day.
Clean Before the Tree and the Boxes Come Out
The easiest carpet to clean is a carpet with nothing on it. Once a tree is up, there's a stand, lights, presents, and a skirt on the floor, and furniture has been shoved aside to make room. Moving all of that for a cleaning is a chore, and some of it can't be moved easily at all.
If you can, do the cleaning first and decorate after. You'll also have a fresher floor under the tree, which matters if kids and pets are going to be sitting on it for weeks.
Our guide to preparing your home for carpet cleaning covers what to clear and what can stay.
Leave Time for the Carpet to Dry
Damp carpet isn't a good surface for guests, and it's not a good time to be moving furniture back. Walking on it too soon can leave marks and pick up dirt from shoes. Plan around the whole drying window, and check the carpet before the room goes back to normal use.
The Carpet and Rug Institute notes that airflow, HVAC, and dehumidifiers can help, so ask your cleaner what to do in your rooms. In a damp Northwest fall, a closed-up house can take longer, and a heated, ventilated one can take less.
If you're hosting overnight guests, think about which rooms they'll use. The guest room and the living room are good ones to finish early.
Think About Pets, Kids, and High-Traffic Spots
Holiday visitors tend to walk the same path: the front door, the hallway, the living room, the kitchen. Those traffic lanes show wear first. Mention them when you book so we know where to look.
If a pet has left a spot or a smell, tell us that too. Our pet stain and odor removal treatment is separate from a routine clean, and it's best to have it handled before the room is full of people.
And if your carpet was last cleaned more than a year ago, it's probably due anyway. The Carpet and Rug Institute recommends professional deep cleaning every 12 to 18 months.
Add Rugs and Upholstery to the Same Visit
Carpet is only part of what guests sit and walk on. The area rug under the coffee table and the sofa where everyone ends up are worth thinking about at the same time.
- Area rug cleaning is its own process, and some rugs go to our rug facility instead of being cleaned in place. Rugs need time to come back, so ask early.
- Upholstery cleaning covers sofas and chairs, and it's a good pairing with a carpet visit.
For rugs, our article on in-home or off-site rug cleaning walks through the choices.
A Simple Countdown to Your Gathering
Here's the order we'd use if it were our own house. Adjust it to your dates.
- Before decorating: clear the rooms, book the cleaning, and decide on rugs and upholstery.
- Cleaning day: move small items off the floor, keep pets in a room that isn't being cleaned, and walk the rooms with the crew to point out problem spots.
- After cleaning: let the carpet dry fully, then bring the furniture back and put up the tree.
- Right before guests: vacuum lightly once it's dry and set out mats at the door, since wet boots and winter coats are coming in.
None of that needs to be perfect. It's just a way to keep the cleaning from landing on the same day as everything else.
What If You're Already Close to the Date?
It happens. A relative announces a visit, or the holiday sneaks up. If your date is close, call anyway. We can tell you what's open and what we'd focus on, and sometimes the high-traffic rooms matter most.
Be clear about the rooms that matter and the day guests arrive. If we can't fit a full visit before then, you'll hear that from us right away, and you can decide whether to book a smaller job or a day after your gathering.

Common Questions
When Should I Schedule Carpet Cleaning Before the Holidays?
Schedule it after the house is cleared out and before decorations, a tree, or guests arrive. Work back from your first guest date, leave time for drying plus a spare day, and ask for available days before your calendar fills up.
How Long Before Guests Arrive Should Carpet Be Cleaned?
Leave at least the full drying window, which for our service is a planning range of 8 to 24 hours, plus time to put furniture back. A spare day on top of that is a good cushion for plans that change.
Should I Clean Carpet Before or After Decorating for the Holidays?
Before is easier. With a tree, boxes, and presents on the floor, it's hard to move furniture and reach all the carpet. Cleaning first also gives you a fresh floor under the tree.
Can You Clean Area Rugs and Upholstery at the Same Time?
Yes, rug and upholstery cleaning are separate services that pair well with a carpet visit. Some rugs are cleaned at our rug facility, so tell us early if you want a rug back before your gathering.
