How to Get Blood Out of Carpet, and What Not to Do
If it just happened, here is what to do before you call anyone.
- Blot, do not rub. Press a clean white cloth onto the stain to lift as much as you can. Rubbing spreads it and pushes it deeper.
- Use cold water only. Blood is protein, and heat can set it. Dampen the spot with cold water and keep blotting from the outside toward the middle.
- Skip the strong stuff. Bleach, and peroxide on some carpets, can leave a light spot that is harder to fix than the stain.
- Do not soak it. Flooding the spot pushes the blood down into the backing and pad, where it can come back up as the carpet dries.
A small fresh drop often comes out this way. A dried stain, or blood across more than one room, is worth handing to a professional before it sets further.
How We Removed the Blood Stains From Carpet in Freeland

How do you get blood out of carpet?
Blot up as much as you can with a clean white cloth, then work the spot with cold water, blotting from the outside in. Never use hot water, which can set blood into the fibers. If a stain is dried, large, or has spread across several rooms, have it professionally extracted.
Can dried blood be removed from carpet?
Often, yes. Dried blood is harder than fresh, and the sooner it is treated the better, but the blood stains on this Freeland job came out of the carpet completely.
Should I use hydrogen peroxide on a blood stain in carpet?
Be careful. Peroxide can lift blood, but it can also bleach or lighten carpet, especially wool and darker colors. Test it somewhere hidden first, or leave it to us.
